SPEC

Camp Leader

The Camp Leader will work under the direction of the Chair of Innovations in conjunction with the STEM Potential Enrichment Camp (SPEC). Camp Leaders will be responsible for facilitating and running activities for high-school aged participants throughout during camp weeks. Utilizing resources at the University of Alberta North Campus, Camp Leaders will design and facilitate their own activities, support activities run by collaborators, and facilitate pre-planned activities. Camp Leaders will also be responsible for tracking participant attendance and ensuring safety of all participants.

The Camp Leader reports to the Chair of Innovations.

​

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitating hands-on STEM-related activities.

  • Creating, organizing and preparing STEM activities.

  • Support collaborators with facilitating activities.

  • Ensure safe handling of equipment and materials.

  • Ensure participants demonstrate a safe attitude.

  • Design and grade participant assessments.

  • Supervise participants.

  • Track participant attendance.

  • Report any issues to the Chair of Innovations.

Police Information Checks: Current Police Information Checks including a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required by successful applicants. Police Information Checks are the financial responsibility of the applicant.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Camp Leaders may have flexible hours in-person and/or from home during planning weeks, but will be expected to work 40 hours per week. Camp Leaders will be expected to work from 8am - 4:00pm MST during camp weeks.

Wage: $17.21 CAD per hour

Qualifications:

Education and Certifications

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Alberta.

  • WHMIS and lab-related training is considered an asset.

Experience

  • Working with high-school students in a professional or volunteer setting.

  • Experience planning and hosting events.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Familiarity with undergraduate laboratory settings (including wet labs, computer labs, maker-spaces, etc.).

  • Working knowledge within a major STEM field.

Camp Coordinator

The Camp Coordinator will work under the direction of the Chair of Innovations in conjunction with the STEAM Potential Enrichment Camp (SPEC). The Camp Coordinator will be responsible for supervising and assessing activities planned for high school participants by Camp Leaders. They will ensure activities planned are safe and appropriate for high school participants. Camp Coordinators will handle logistical aspects of events including room bookings and signing waivers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support and supervise Camp Leaders when
    planning and facilitating activities.

  • Test and assess activities planned by Camp
    Leaders.

  • Ensure Camp Leaders are trained in running
    SPEC activities.

  • Support collaborators with facilitating activities.

  • Ensure Camp Leaders are being safe role models.

  • Handle logistical aspects of event planning.

  • Track participant attendance.

  • Generate daily reports of major events to Chair
    of Innovations.

  • Report incidents to the Chair of Innovations.​​​​​​​​​

  • Bachelors in Education or STEM (preferred).

  • WHMIS and lab-related training is required.

  • Emergency first aid certification.

Experience

  • Working with high-school students in a professional or volunteer setting.

  • Experience planning and hosting events.

  • Experience in executive or administrative settings.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Familiarity with undergraduate laboratory settings (including wet labs, computer labs, maker-spaces, etc.).

  • Working knowledge within a major STEM field.
